In November 2023, Kairos Ark Publishing, in partnership with Exclusive Books, hosted the first in-store launch of the Loss – iLahleko book series at the Rosebank branch of Exclusive Books. This event was held in line with the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, drawing a full house of attendees who experienced a powerful blend of live performances, an audio-book listening session, and interviews with contributors to the series.
The event featured thought-provoking conversations led by renowned poet vangile gantsho and included performances by several writers, musicians, and designers involved in the project. Notable contributors like Flow Wellington, Hlayisani Shiburi, Lindokuhle Mnguni, Tsosheletso Chidi Bongwadi, Maleshoane “Ladybird” Mphutlane, Elaine Pillay, Sanele Lasta Mkhize, Qhali, and book illustrator Madikela Dikgale shared their creative journeys, offering insights into the making of Loss – iLahleko, their roles and the book’s broader mission.
A central theme of the launch was the role indigenous languages play in breaking down barriers when discussing gender-based violence and the collaborative power of women. Some contributors shared how expressing personal experiences in one’s native language helped create a more open and authentic dialogue around these critical issues.
This event was just the first in a series of initiatives that Kairos Ark aims to collaborate on in support of the 16 Days of Activism campaign. The launch was made possible through the support of the National Arts Council of South Africa, which partly funded the publication of the books and the Loss – iLahleko programming under the QS Youth Mission. This mission provides free copies of the book series, along with care packages, to children and youth in rural communities across South Africa. Proceeds from the sale of each book go towards donating free books to young people in these marginalized areas.
