About the book:
“Ngihambe izwe lonke ngifunana nawe, ngiphupha ngawe, ngikhala ngawe…”
~ suicide letter, Sanele Lasta Mkhize
Written by twelve extraordinary South African female writers, here lies a multilingual journey of loss experienced by women and children over multiple generations in an unequal and unjust society that has made way for violence to rob us of our bodies, minds, and languages.
This isiZulu edition has been translated by Dr. Evangeline Bonisiwe Zungu is a professor and senior lecturer in the Department of African Languages at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. She specializes in onomastics, sociolinguistics, indigenous knowledge systems, and translations. Her current areas of research are in African Indigenous Knowledge Systems, focusing on the plight of rural women, power dynamics, and gender politics. She has worked at different institutions, like the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the Durban University of Technology. She is the author of several widely published books, including her first book, ‘Zulu Names, Polygyny, and Gender Politics in Traditional Societies’, published by UKZN Press, which was the first to examine how names have become social outlets for sentiments of hostility within Zulu polygynous families.
